The Tamil month of Margazhi may have just concluded, though its essence continued to shape the days that followed. And, when a travel friendship finds its way to the stage, the evening becomes more than just a performance.
It was one of those days that moved relentlessly from one commitment to the next – demanding, exhausting, but quietly fulfilling. Earlier that morning, I had completed my maiden duathlon; a run followed by a bicycle ride. Physically drained yet mentally calm, I made my way later in the day to a Bharatanatyam Arangetram. The invitation came from a friend I met years ago during a travel. What began as a brief introduction slowly grew into occasional conversations over time, and eventually into invitations to important moments in each other’s lives. Travel has a way of introducing you to people whose presence extends well beyond the journey that introduced you.

The venue was Mylapore, a place inseparable from music, art, and tradition. The last time I met this family, their daughter was still in primary school. Seeing her now composed, confident, and stepping onto the stage after years of disciplined practice was deeply moving.
Witnessing the Arangetram Through the Lens
Bharatanatyam has always made my heart pound. There is a quiet intensity to it. The geometry of movement, the stillness between expressions, and the storytelling held within every gesture. This is not the first time Bharatanatyam has found its way into my work. Over the years, I have documented a few such performances, each offering a different perspective through my lens. I have shared links to few of my earlier Bharatanatyam photo series at the end of this article. Despite my previous engagements, I found myself completely engrossed into this performance, and as a photographer, instinctively visualizing frames even before lifting the camera.

I positioned myself quietly in the auditorium, allowing the performance to unfold while I documented it through my lens. What these photographs capture is more than a performance. They reflect years of effort, unwavering dedication, and a defining milestone in a young dancer’s journey.

Some invitations are special not merely because of the occasion, but because they gently remind how beautifully life weaves connections. Through travel, through time, and through art.
